Groovie Ghoulies

"Born in the Basement" CD (Lookout!)

Not good. Really, very not good. It is so unfortunate that the "cute female singer equals good band" equation is still so foolishly prevalent. (ADAM)

"Appetite For Adrenochrome" CD (Lookout!)

Remember when you were a kid and there was that one house on Halloween that always turned their garage into a Haunted Mansion? I found their kids and they grew up and soundproofed that garage and started a band. Hey, your brother stole my Huffy. (DAVE)

"World Contact Day" CD (Lookout!)

I'm jaded. I'll finally cop to it. I think the Ramones had a few great records, but I'm getting as sick of this fucking slavish, sycophantic guitar worship as I am of lousy pop-punk, "punk" bands on major labels and the sludgy, mind-numbing shit which passes for heavy metal these days. Maybe everything good has been done and the only way we can understand this is by not only exhuming rock's corpses but taking a few bites out of them just to make sure there isn't any residual life left. Don't get me wrong, this is a decent record, but I have roughly the same emotional reaction as I do to Velveeta or well-laid tiling. There is life beyond Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee and Tommy, y'know.

"The Island Of Pogo Pogo" b/w "Gates Of Steel" (Lookout!)
